[웡카] 를 보고, [Wonka]

[웡카(2023)] 로알드 달의 원작 '찰리과 초콜릿 공장'의 오리지널 프리퀄 영화인 [웡카]를 초등학생 딸과 함께 관람하고 왔다. 플롯 구성에 약간 의아함이 있기는 했지만, 뮤지컬 구성으로 귀가 즐거웠고 영상미도 좋았다. 어머니의 사랑, 권선징악 등의 고전적인 내용도 감동을 받기에 충분했다. 중간중간 웃음을 유발할 수 있는 요소들도 만족스러웠다. 영화의 배경이 되는 정확한 시대나 국가가 불명확하다. 분위기로 추정할 수만 있다. 돌아다니는 자동차나 사람들의 복장은 20세기 초반의 유럽인 것 같고, 큰 백화점 건물은 런던의 수정궁을 생각나게 한다. 그 외의 풍경들도 20세기 초 런던과 파리의 모습을 섞어 놓은 것 같다. 100년 전 서유럽의 '벨 에포크'시대가 있었다. 산업혁명 및 과학 기술의 발달과 함께 식민지에서 수탈한 자원을 바탕으로 무려 100여 년 가까이 지속된 번영의 시대이다. 3 대가 넘는 시간의 평화와 번영은 지금으로선 상상하기가 어렵다. 대한민국도 625 전쟁 이후 1960년대부터 2020년대까지 꾸준한 성장을 했는데, 북한과 휴전 상태라는 점에서 약간 느낌이 다르다. 한국은 눈부신 경제발전 속에서도 잊을 만 하면 북한과의 사건이 일어나 시민들을 불안하게 했다. '벨 에포크'시대의 사회 분위기는 낙관주의 그 자체였다. 전쟁도 없고 혁신적인 기술 발전과 함께, 사람들은 모든 것이 잘 될 것이라는 희망에 차 있었던 것 같다. 세계 대전이 터지기 전까진. 이 시대가 완벽한 사회는 아니었다. 화려한 이면에는 현대 기준으로 상상할 수 없는 모습들도 많았다. 아동 노동 착취는 기본이고, 빈부격차는 엄청났으며 가난한 사람들의 인권은 멸시당했다. 다만, 워낙 사회 분위기가 낙관 일변도였기 때문에, 이들도 언젠가는 잘 될 것이라는 희망의 힘으로 살아갈 수 있지 않았을까 싶다. [웡카]에서도 부당하게 중노동에 시달리는 캐릭터들이 등장하고, 부패한 경찰과 성직자들이사회를 장악하고 있다. '웡카'의 초콜릿은 희망과 행복 그 자체다. 불행한 사람들은 초콜릿을 먹자마자 희망에 차올라 삶의 의지가 샘솟고, 풍족한 사람들도 더 행복해지게 한다. 말 그대로 하늘을 둥둥 떠다니게 된다. 현재를 잊게 만들 정도로 극도의 황홀감, 중독성. '이거 완전 마약 같은데?' 라는 음모론도 있지만, 마약과 다르게 일상 생활을 망가뜨리지 않고, 초콜릿으로 인한 행복과 기쁨, 사랑과 평화 등의 효과만 강조되며 부정적인 모습이 전혀 묘사되지 않는다. '희망'과 '행복'은 인과성이 있다. 희망이 있으면 행복감을 느낄 수 있다. 그러나 그 희망이 깨어질 때 불행감을 느낀다. 이로 인해 희망 자체를 거부하는 경우도 많다. 헛된 희망을 경계하는 것이다. 그러나 희망은 삶의 원동력이 된다. 희망이 없어도 살아갈 수는 있지만 희망이 있으면 훨씬 원활하게 살 수 있다. 헛된 희망이 싫다면 계획을 세울 때 항상 플랜 B를 세우는게 좋다. 계획이 실패했을 때도 대비해 놓으면 절망까지 빠지지는 않는다. 우리의 삶에도 '웡카의 초콜릿' 같은 것이 있었으면 좋겠다. 가장 현실적으로 비슷한 것은 부모님의 사랑이나 자식을 향한 사랑인 것 같다.

[Wonka(2023)]

I came back from watching [Wonka], the original prequel movie of Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' with my elementary school daughter. Although there were some slight perplexities in the plot construction, the musical arrangement was delightful, and the cinematography was also excellent. The classical themes of maternal love and moral retribution were sufficiently moving, and the elements that elicited laughter throughout were also satisfying.

The exact era or country serving as the backdrop of the movie is unclear. It can only be speculated through the atmosphere. The cars driving around and the attire of the people resemble early 20th-century Europeans, while the grand department store building evokes thoughts of Crystal Palace in London. Other landscapes also seem like a mix of early 20th-century London and Paris. There was a period in Western Europe known as the 'Belle Époque' about a hundred years ago. It was an era of prosperity that lasted for over a century, fueled by the Industrial Revolution, scientific advancements, and the exploitation of resources from colonies. The peace and prosperity spanning over three generations is difficult to imagine from today's perspective. South Korea has experienced steady growth since the Korean War in the 1960s to the 2020s, but the feeling is somewhat different due to the ceasefire status with North Korea. The social atmosphere of the 'Belle Époque' era was characterized by optimism itself. There were no wars, and along with innovative technological developments, people seemed to be filled with hope that everything would turn out well, at least until the outbreak of World War I.

However, this era was not a perfect society. Behind the glamour, there were many aspects that are unimaginable by modern standards. Child labor exploitation was rampant, the wealth gap was enormous, and the human rights of the poor were disregarded. Nevertheless, due to the overwhelming optimism prevailing in society, one might wonder if even these people could live with the power of hope, believing that things would eventually get better. In [Wonka] too, characters suffering unfairly from child labor and corrupt police and clergy dominating society are depicted.

The chocolate in 'Wonka' embodies hope and happiness itself. Unhappy individuals feel a surge of hope and determination as soon as they eat chocolate, and it makes even wealthy people happier. It literally makes them float in the air with extreme ecstasy and addiction. There are conspiracy theories that it's like a drug, but unlike narcotics, it doesn't ruin daily life; it only emphasizes the positive effects of happiness, joy, love, and peace brought about by chocolate, without depicting any negative aspects.

'Hope' and 'happiness' have causality. With hope, one can feel happiness. However, when that hope is shattered, one feels unhappiness. This leads many to reject hope itself to avoid futile hope. However, hope becomes the driving force of life. Even though one can live without hope, life becomes much smoother with hope. If you dislike futile hope, it's always good to have a Plan B when making plans. By preparing for failure, one can avoid falling into despair.

It would be nice if there were something like 'Wonka's chocolate' in our lives. The most realistic equivalent seems to be the love of parents or the love for one's children
